Tom Finkelpearl, the president and director of Queens Museum, is scheduled to be named as New York's commissioner of cultural affairs by mayor Bill de Blasio, putting him in charge of the city's $156m budget.
The New York Times says the appointment is in keeping with the new administration's emphasis on the disenfranchised. In his 13 years at Queens Finkelpearl hired community organisers to professionalise outreach efforts and emphasised the diversity of the local immigrant population.
