Starkwhite at Sydney Contemporary

We presented a two-person exhibition at this year's edition of Sydney Contemporary - photographs by Fiona Pardington (NZ) and paintings by Michael Zavros (AUS), and three of our artists - Richard Maloy, Grant Stevens and Clinton Watkins - were included in the Video Contemporary section curated by Serena Bentley.

Clinton Watkins' video Hawk (2013) has been selected for the video section of Sydney Contemporary 2017 curated this year by Serena Bentley, curator at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne.

Jim Speers and Clinton Watkins at Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai

A collaborative work by Jim Speers and Clinton Watkins, with shanghai-based artist Li Xiao Fei (who was a guest artist at Starkwhite in 2013), features in the exhibition Tell Me A Story: Locality And Narratives at the Rockbound Art Museum, Shanghai. From Sydney Contemporary to M100 Santiago

Artspace's Mark Feary has curated a show from his Video Contemporary exhibition at Sydney Contemporary for Santiago's Centro Cultural Matucana 100 (M100). The exhibition, which runs from 6 December 2013 - 26 January 2014, includes Clinton Watkins' Continuous Ship #1 and Continuous Ship #3. Watkins' work also features this month in another Feary video project at Seoul's ONE AND J Gallery.

Clinton Watkins in Crosstalk

Clinton Watkins is one of four artists featured in Crosstalk at the University of Connecticut's Contemporary Art Galleries, with a video titled Landscape Distortions. The exhibition focuses on single channel video work exploring various aspects of music performance, not to be confused with music videos.

Australia's new art fair launched tonight

Sydney Contemporary gets underway this afternoon with a collectors preview followed by the  vernissage. Located in Sydney's historic Carriageworks, the fair includes two curated sections - Video Contemporary curated by Artspace's Mark Feary and Installation Contemporary curated by Aaron Seeto, the director/curator of 4A centre for Contemporary Asian Art.

Art as a sleeping aid

Long-haul Air New Zealand passengers could soon be soothed to sleep by a new artwork on the airline's inflight entertainment programme. Clinton Watkins, who specialises in investigating the effects that combinations of sound and vision can have on the viewer/listener, has produced a video featuring a continuous slow shot along a New Zealand east coast road and a gentle soundtrack that incorporates delta waves. These inaudible low frequency sound waves are present during sleep and the intention of the work is to lull passengers into a sleepy state. View video excerpt.

Clinton Watkins: visualising real time noise at the Bledisloe Walkway

Captured by contact microphones placed throughout the city centre, the sound of traffic, air vents and building vibrations infuse broadcast test tone colour fields to visualise real time noise in Clinton Watkins' City Noise project commissioned by the Auckland City Council's public art team for the Bledisloe Walkway light boxes. City Noise opens at 5.00pm tonight at the walkway between the Aotea Centre and Wellesley Street.

Upstairs at Starkwhite

Since 1994 Clinton Watkins and Richard Francis have worked collaboratively under the moniker 1000. They regularly perform and produce recordings that focus on creating stark and intense minimal/maximal compositions of electronically generated noise. One Step Further From Birth, which is part of our upstairs group show of works by represented artists, is a limited edition lathe-cut LP including a link to free mp3 downloads.
